A customer in Lower Broadheath, WR2 contacted Elgar Services after one of their radiators stopped heating properly during a particularly cold spell.

With the room failing to warm up, we arranged a visit to inspect the radiator and identify what was preventing the hot water from circulating as it should.

What Was Causing the Radiator to Stay Cold?

There are several reasons why a radiator may not heat properly.

Common causes can include:

  • Trapped air

  • Stuck or faulty radiator valves

  • A blockage within the pipework

  • Problems with circulation

  • Issues elsewhere within the central heating system

Rather than assuming the radiator simply needed bleeding, we carried out checks to establish what was actually causing the problem.

Checking the Central Heating Pipework

During the visit, we checked the flow through the pipes serving the radiator.

The initial signs suggested that the issue was not simply trapped air. Further investigation indicated that there was a blockage restricting the flow of hot water to the radiator.

Once the cause had been identified, we were able to carry out the necessary work to restore circulation.

Getting the Radiator Heating Again

After clearing the restriction and checking the system, the radiator began heating properly again.

This meant the customer could get the room back up to temperature without unnecessarily replacing the radiator or carrying out more extensive work.

Why Is My Radiator Not Getting Hot?

If you have a radiator that stays cold while the rest of your heating is working, there could be several possible causes.

A radiator that is cold at the top may simply need bleeding, while a radiator that is cold throughout could point to a valve, circulation or pipework issue.

If several radiators are affected, the problem may be within the wider central heating system.

It is worth getting recurring problems investigated rather than repeatedly bleeding radiators or adjusting valves without knowing the underlying cause.
