Ten Top Tips to Stay Safe

Here are ten simple steps to help keep you safe and warm in your home:

1. Use a Gas Safe Registered Engineer

Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix, and service your gas appliances. You can find and verify an engineer at GasSafeRegister.co.uk or by calling 0800 408 5500.

2. Verify Your Engineer’s Credentials

Check both sides of your engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card. Ensure they are qualified for the specific work you need done. The necessary information is on the back of the card.

3. Regular Servicing and Safety Checks

Have all your gas appliances serviced and safety checked every year. If you rent your home, ask for a copy of the landlord’s current Gas Safety Record.

4. Recognise Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Be aware of the six signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning: headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse, and loss of consciousness. Unsafe gas appliances can put you at risk of CO poisoning, gas leaks, fires, and explosions.

5. Inspect Gas Appliances

Check gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly. Look for lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance, and excessive condensation in the room.

6. Install a Carbon Monoxide Alarm

Fit an audible carbon monoxide alarm in your home. This device will alert you if there is carbon monoxide present.

7. Keep Vents and Chimneys Clear

Ensure vents are not blocked, as they are vital for proper gas appliance function. Chimneys should be cleaned and checked regularly.

8. Use Gas Appliances as Intended

Only use gas appliances for their intended purpose. For example, do not use a gas cooker to heat a room.

9. Know the Emergency Procedure

Familiarize yourself with the emergency procedure for your UK region in case you smell gas or suspect immediate danger.

10. Spread the Word

Share this vital gas safety information with friends, family, and neighbours to help keep your community safe.

By following these ten tips, you can help ensure that your home remains safe and warm. For more detailed information on gas safety, including how to find and check the Gas Safe Register, visit the Gas Safety Week websites
